The Accounting Director is responsible for financial accounting and risk management, including corporate accounting, cost accounting, periodic financial reporting, financial analysis, cash management, internal control policy, and compliance with GAAP and tax authorities. 

Job Duties

  • Support the CEO and COO in developing organizational strategies by contributing financial and accounting information, analysis, and recommendations to strategic thinking and direction; establishing functional objectives in line with organizational strategies.
  • Oversee the Accounting function; ensuring accurate, timely, informative financial statements and reporting; leading change by evaluating trends, designing systems, accumulating resources, and resolving problems; and developing group action plans and initiatives necessary to support company growth.
  • Provide guidance and oversight to the creation of financial reporting and analysis that is routine or ad hoc, actionable and insightful, presentation is easy to understand, and encompasses sales performance, margin & profitability analysis, cash forecasting, and other key performance indicators.
  • Participate in an iterative and collaborative process with management to develop and maintain company annual operating plan/budget, forecast, and variance analysis.
  • Support the preparation of the presentation for the Board in collaboration with COO, and the Planning & Analysis team, including financial reports, analyses & projections.
  • Ensure that financial activities and operations are carried out in compliance with local, state, and federal regulations and laws governing business operations.
  • Develop and maintain books of accounts compliant with generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP) and tax authorities.
  • Manage tax accounting processes to ensure all relevant data is compliant and available for federal & state tax returns and state sales and use taxes. Coordinate tax planning with tax accountant.
  • Develop, improve and document accounting policies and procedures to achieve efficiencies, accuracy and ensure strong internal controls are effectively implemented and maintained.
  • Implement cost accounting and financial analysis programs that analyze profitability performance of company activities and initiatives, and proactively identifies performance or cost reduction opportunities.
  • Oversee banking relationship and foresight on needs for lending and financing activity or daily cash management needs.
  • Manage insurance and risk management needs of the company.
  • Maintain knowledge about projects on which accounting staff are working; provide direction for project, coordinate, and build synergies and collaboration where appropriate; facilitate integration and sharing of staff knowledge and efforts with other staff.
  • Ensure that business systems and software are effective and efficient to maintain optimum workflow in financial operations; participates in system integration, reporting and new software purchases.
  • Hire, train, motivate, evaluate, and manage staff in order to ensure that employees receive adequate guidance and resources to accomplish established group objectives.

 

Required Education/Skills      

  • B.A. or B.S. in Accounting
  • 8+ years related experience in accounting.
  • Certified Public Accountant (CPA) Certification.
  • Experience in educational product industry preferred.
  • Exceptional verbal and written communication skills.
  • Exceptional analytical skills.
  • Excellent organizational skills with the ability to handle multiple projects at once while completing quality work on a timely basis and within frequent, tight, deadlines.
  • Significant management and supervisory experience.
  • Experience and comfort working with sensitive & confidential information; exceptional ethics and judgment.
  • Ability to coach employees to enhance their skills and performance and help them develop their careers.

  • Expertise with MS Office (Excel intensive).
  • Experience with mergers and acquisitions preferred.
  • Experience with Enterprise Applications(s), preferably NetSuite Cloud ERP.
  • Ability to sit for long periods of time; ability to access, input, and retrieve information from the computer.
  • Ability to travel approximately 10 travel days per year.
